CFP® practitioners such as Mary Rae Fouts, EA, CFP® must demonstrate the Four E’s prior to gain the CFP® certification: education, examination, experience, and ethics. Following completion of a financial planning curriculum at a college or university, the CFP® practitioner candidate must then pass a rigorous two day test encompassing financial planning, retirement planning and employee benefits, estate planning, tax planning, insurance, and investment management. CFP® practitioner candidates must also pass a background check, have a minimum of three years of financial planning experience prior to using the CFP® certification marks, adhere to a code of ethics, and complete continuing education requirements.
Approximately 57,000 individuals maintain the CFP® certification. When selecting a financial planner, make certain the individual is board certified.
The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and federally registered CFP (with flame design) in the United States, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete the CFP Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements. Visit the CFP Board website to learn more about the CFP® certification.
